Gerald Sensabaugh has played eight productive seasons in the NFL, has been a starter for the past five years and had opportunities as a free agent this offseason.

But he has decided, at the age of 29, to retire.

The former Dallas Cowboys safety will sign a one-day contract to retire with the team that signed him in 2009 after he spent his first four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I am forever grateful for the opportunities given to me by the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys,” Sensabaugh said in a statement released to USA TODAY Sports through his agent, Kevin Conner, and Conner’s firm, Universal Sports and Entertainment Management. “I look forward to the next chapter in my life, being a full-time father, supporting the newly reorganized East Tennessee State University football program and enjoying my passion for bass fishing.”

Sensabaugh signed a five-year, $22.5 million with the Cowboys before the 2011 season but was cut this year because the team needed to shave a lot of salary-cap space before the start of the league year. He visited the Arizona Cardinals and spoke to other teams.

But Sensabaugh made what Conner termed a “personal and professional decision” to walk away. Conner said Sensabaugh is healthy and his decision is not related to any physical concerns. He declined to elaborate any further.

Sensabaugh’s referencing the East Tennessee State program, which will return this season after it was discontinued in 2003, could be an indication he plans to take up a role with the team. Sensabaugh played for East Tennessee State but transferred to North Carolina when the Buccaneers’ program was shut down.

He finished 19th in the boater standings.

Though Gerald Sensabaugh is relatively new to tournament fishing, the sport has captured his competitive fancy. Understandable, considering Sensabaugh is a

glutton for competition as the starting safety for the Dallas Cowboys. When he’s not playing football, among other things Sensabaugh is fishing Cowboy Division tournaments of the Walmart Bass Fishing League.

Born in Oakland, Calif.,
Sensabaugh moved to
Kingsport, Tenn., with his family
when he was 11. He played college football at East Tennessee State University and the University of North Carolina, and ultimately wound up being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2009, he signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys and quickly became one of that team’s top defensive players.

“Fishing has always been one of my passions,” Sensabaugh says. “Right now I’m mainly just fishing for the fun of it, but Billy Cline, a fishing buddy of mine, talked me into entering the Sam Rayburn [BFL] event. I’ve fished local tournaments, but Sam Rayburn is my first big tournament. I like to compete, so maybe I’ll stick with it.”

Sensabaugh also is hosting the first annual Down Set Fish Charity Bass Tournament on Saturday, April 27 at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, Texas. For more information, visit Sensabaugh’s website: gsensabaugh.com.

I’ve never fished lake Grapevine but as you can see I had a good day. My teammate, Brandon Carr, and I caught about 15 bass. As we were ready to pack up my last bite proved to be a big one! I caught my largest bass to date. The fish weighed in at over 7 lbs. After weighing him and a couple photos I threw him back…

Gray, TN –

A famous NFL face made students smile today. Dallas Cowboy Gerald Sensabaugh surprised a fifth-grade class at Ridgeview Elementary School in Gray.

Student Jacob Hubbard befriended the NFL player last season. His mom work’s with Sensabaugh’s cousin.

The former Dobyns-Bennett star helped Hubbard with a school project. He answered the student’s questions about school, respect, the game of football, and how to follow instruction.

“I was glad to hear today that he received a 100 on his project and I was glad that I was able to help,” Sensabaugh said. “That’s pretty much all I wanted to do today was come out here and enjoy his class and sign some pictures and I had a good time.”

Sensabaugh not only took pictures with the kids today during his visit, he also signed autographed photos for Hubbard’s entire class.

One of my favorite things to do during off season is fish! Recently I have been fishing on the lakes around the Dallas metroplex. So far Lake Ray Hubbard is my favorite, but there are still so many lakes around here that I have not tried. Please comment if you have any advice on the local fishing hot spots around here.
